IC
Name: Goodnight Robicheaux
Age: unstated, but likely late 40s
Series Magnificent Seven (2016)
Canon Point: End of move (spoiler - he dies)

Personality:
Goodnight is first and foremost the quintessential Southern Gentleman. He thinks nothing of introducing himself to a lady by kissing her hand and speaking in French to her. He's verbosely friendly and never runs out of words to use, always having some sort of pithy quote or energetic banter for just that occasion. He's so fond of waxing poetic that he quotes a line from Shakespeare to Sam in one scene.

He relies on his whits and his charm and his legend to see him though a lot of his days. He goes though life as the dandy cowboy, well dressed, well mannered, with a swagger and the aforementioned legend he wields like a weapon. He holds court in barbershops and controls dangerous situations with only a few short words and an unspoken threat. He would frankly rather his words instead of the gun at his hip if he can help it. Even when he's melancholy, when he is in front of people, he is always on stage. Goodnight is the consummate performer, putting on a flawless show of congeniality and manners for all the world to see.

Unfortunately, most of that is indeed an well crafted act. He uses the his Southern Charm to hide just how broken he actually is. Goodnight suffers terribly from PTSS due to all the killing he did during the Civil War. He has trouble sleeping at night, complaining about dreams of owls, which he feels represent his sins and the wings of death. These deaths follow him everywhere. To combat this, he heavily medicates himself with opium laced cigarettes and laudanum and copious amounts of alcohol. In very tense or violent situations, he will have panic attacks. He has frozen up during a firefight. Unable to so much as pull a trigger when people are shooting at him. At this point, he relies on his partner has to cover for him and help him save face. He is generally haunted by what he has done. He considers himself a coward and hates the legend he made for himself. Goody says it himself that "Fame is a Sarcophagus", alluding to the fact that being famous is a like a fancy coffin. Pretty to look at, but a cage once you are shut in. Once inside a tomb, you can never get back out of it. He tells those he teaches to shoot that 'you have to hate what you are firing at', but Goodnight probably hates himself most of all. He even refered himself as trash in the past when talking with Sam.

He comes to Rose Creek because of a debt he owes to Sam, a very old friend. He runs away from Rose Creek the night before the big battle because of his fears. He fears that if he shoots again in violence, he will die a terrible death himself. Not only that, but he knows the real reason for Sam wanting to fight this fight and he knows this revenge is just a fool's errand. He goes on to tell Sam that for himself 'the war is never over, the killing just goes on and on'. Goodnight is aware that because of who he is and the skills he has, he'll never ever be free of the killing. So he runs away, unable to cope with the idea of bringing even more death by his hand.

He returns to Rose Creek to warn the others of the Gatling gun he saw because, in the end, he couldn't live with himself as a coward who ran away.

Please describe your character's sins and how they influence them:
1. Slavery - He's a rich landowning white man from Louisiana in the period leading up to and then right after the Civil War. While personally, he is best friends with an African American and seems to want nothing to do with that sort of thing, the fact remains that he grew up in such an environment. He was likely raised by slaves and his family money likely came from the trade and labor of them. Even if he didn't personally own slaves, he was still complicit in the act by not only doing nothing to go against it, but even fighting as a Confederate. Because of this, it informs how he sees the treatment of others. Goody is far more astute at how minorities are treated and has made it his life to help at least one such person navigate the world of white men.

2. Murder - Goodnight was a sharpshooter for the Confederacy. Canonically, he is known to have killed 23 at the Battle of Antietam.A bonus deleted scene also attributes at least one kill at Chantilly to him. Due to the battle history of the Unit he was supposed to have been a part of, it would not be that far fetched to put his wartime kill count in the lower 90s. These deaths weigh heavily on Goodnight. He killed them from a distance for a cause he didn't even believe in. For a war he likely only fought in because it was expected of him. He believes he'll never be clean of the blood he's shed. (Additionally, it's very likely that after the War, regardless of his PTSS, Goodnight has had to kill others and in the movie, he killed at least 3 - 6 men). He's also complacent in the quick draw kills that Billy Rocks does, having set that up

3. Gambling and confidence games/Lying - Goody is a con man. He sets up quick draw matches with a man he knows people will bet against on principle. He then reaps the rewards when they win. Those unwilling to pay, he will throw around his Legend and make them pay double. He is also a pretty good hand at poker, his general friendliness making him a hard mark to read. He's also prone to lying. There is no telling how many times or iterations of the same story he'll tell. He likes a story and the more sensational the better.

4. Addiction - The Victorian era was pretty much shit for how it dealt with mental health issues. Goodnight would have been able to get laudanum from pretty much any general store he walked into. Historically, it was used to treats all sort of illnesses, including the terrors that Goodnight suffers from. Additionally, he drinks very heavily, always with a flask at his hip or a bottle close at hand. He's rarely ever seen sitting in a public surrounded by people without some sort of alcohol in hand. He also drinks heavily after he's forced to shoot for display. It's also been stated in cast interviews that the cigarettes he shares with Billy Rocks are laced with Opium. It's unclear if he can actually go without these substances, but it's highly unlikely. Going cold turkey now would probably throw Goody in a downward spiral that he couldn't get back out of. He uses them to keep himself calm going for a drink or a smoke whenever things get too much for him to handle.

5. Homosexuality - Bless Ye Olde West and Victorian Sensibilities. Though only really inferred in the movie as something more than just friends, Goodnight and Billy are obviously painfully close. They've been 'partners' for years by the time we meet them in the movie. By this time they've traveling together, lived together, fought together, did everything together as equals. It's stated "where I go, Billy goes" and they split things 50/50. They also sit very close. Often times, with one of them touching the other in some form or fashion. They also share cigarettes, passing one back and forth between them. The same with the flask. After the first big shootout, Goodnight is the only person that Billy seems to show any real concern for. If they are indeed a couple, this is deeply taboo. Being homosexual in that time period could mean anything from jail time to being hung. Goody would have had to be very careful with how he interacted with other men lest he get thrown out of town or even killed. Even more so with a man like Billy, who would have been seen as less than human at this point in time.

6. Theft - Petty theft is sometimes the difference between surviving and not. During the war, he would have likely stolen clothing off of dead bodies that might be better/warmer than what he had at the moment. As food got more and more scarce, stealing food was normal. Later out in the west, it's the same thing. The difference between starvation and not can sometimes be as simple as taking something from the general store when no one is looking. The quick draw con is also a pretty large instance of theft, since he's tricked these people out of their money.

7. Cowardess - Running away from a fight is a huge taboo. During the war, deserters suffered anything from being branded on the face to being shot like dogs in the streets. The concept of being a coward is to go against every "manly" sentiment there is. A man who runs away is no man at all. He is considered worthless and unworthy of anything but the deepest scorn. Goodnight is a man that has been running for years. He runs from his problems into alcohol. He avoids conflict with words or has Billy do his dirty work. And when it mattered the most, he got on his horse in the dead of the night, and rode away from the sight of a future battle that he helped plan. It doesn't matter than he came back in the end, because the simple fact is that he ran away.

Abilities:
Goodnight is pretty much your normal guy.
- Bilingual - He speaks Cajun French and English
- College Educated - Being well read and having a college degree in Ye Olde West was actually a heck of an accomplishment
- Gift of gab - Goody seems to have a way with words that can get himself out of trouble most of the time
- Crack Shot with a rifle - When Goody can force himself to actually shoot at a thing, it is a headshot. Every single time.
- Playing Piano - it's actually a pretty good way of making some quick cash in local saloons.

Ideas:
Goody honestly thinks he's beyond redemption. He thinks he deserves to suffer. However, once he learns certain 'sins' aren't actually sins here...he's going to do everything in his power to stay. He's already been to Hell, it's called the Civil War. He also doesn't want to go back to the life he left where there is no running water or electric lights or central air conditioning. Where he can't hold hands with a man in the light of day. He's likely to take over the town library and become something of a librarian if he has his way.
